TryEngineering is always looking to share great stories from our friends around IEEE who are pursuing efforts in STEM outreach and education. In this STEM Program Spotlight, we highlight the K-12 Workshop: Understanding “SMART” Systems, a series of two workshops that took place in Region 10.
Jointly organized by the IEEE SPS Delhi Chapter, IEEE SPS IITD Student Branch, and the SPS Education Board, the two K12 Workshops were conducted at the Indian Institute Of Technology Delhi and the Hyderabad International Convention Centre.
IoT Workshop
Internet of Things (IoT) is the recent technological revolution which has marked the end of the era of human-computer interaction. IoT brings the link between the physical and digital world to a whole different level, and completely changes the way human beings use technology. By understanding the significance of IoT as the system embodying the future of technology, workshops were conducted to equip Grade 6 to 8 students with knowledge and skills in the field, while also encouraging the students to think in new and creative ways.
The course began with a thorough introduction to the Internet of Things, explaining its basic concepts and architecture. Participants learned about the complex web of linked sensors, actuators, and devices that make up IoT ecosystems, with a focus on how these networks enable smooth automation and data interchange. The talk focused on how the Internet of Things (IoT) is all around us, from traffic lights that adjust to car flow, to refrigerators that can order milk when you’re running low. To help the students get a feel for what they were learning, the workshop also included hands-on activities in which the students worked in teams to make simple circuits with lights, resistors, and jumper cables!
Python Workshop
Another crucial aspect of learning today’s SMART systems is Python, a versatile programming language that has revolutionized the way we interact with computers and automate tasks. Its simplicity and flexibility has made it an indispensable tool in various fields. By understanding the pivotal role that Python plays in shaping the future of technology, coding workshops were organized to introduce Grade 6 to 8 students to the fundamentals of programming, while fostering creativity and problem-solving abilities.
The workshop began with an introduction to the fundamentals of Python programming. Introducing Python to new learners involves understanding its versatility as a high-level, interpreted programming language known for its readability and efficiency. During the workshop, three ways of running Python code were covered, including interactive mode, script mode and using Integrated Development Environment. By understanding these various methods of running Python code, beginners could choose the approach that best suited their learning style. With their newfound coding skills, students were able to create animations using Python’s Turtle module. Inspired by the movements of a turtle, this offered a straightforward interface for drawing shapes, patterns, and animations.
Outcomes of the Workshops
In total, more than 100 students participated in these workshops! The students were excited and interested, wanting to learn more about everything, whether it was coding, IoT technology, or electronics in general. The students were like sponges, eager to soak up even more, and their ideas and enthusiasm made the whole experience very fun. The workshops had a collaborative learning atmosphere, with students learning not just from the instructors but from one another as well. The hands-on activities were the major appeal, and the sessions provided a wonderful opportunity for students to improve their communication and collaboration abilities required for team work. After the workshop was over, students had a much better grasp of these concepts, by acquiring the fundamentals while also gaining practical experience.
The K12 Workshops were a great step forward in getting young students interested in STEM, and there was genuine enthusiasm and inventiveness among the students. By the end, the students were imagining how they could apply what they had learned in real world applications.
