Do you want to help inspire others to get involved in STEM outreach? Or are you already conducting IEEE STEM outreach events for pre-university students/educators in your local community? Then the IEEE STEM Champion program is for you!
IEEE’s STEM Champion Program is aimed at creating local champions who can help facilitate STEM outreach, provide a linkage to IEEE’s STEM resources, report metrics, and inspire other volunteers to engage in STEM outreach. The program was developed to recognize IEEE volunteers for their contributions, and to build a community of pre-university STEM outreach volunteers.
Who Can Become a STEM Champion?
Any active IEEE member is invited to submit an application to become a STEM Champion! The application window to be selected as a champion opens in March, and after a review process, the new champions are announced in early May. In 2024, 31 new champions were selected!
By being selected as a STEM Champion, IEEE and TryEngineering are recognizing you for your important contributions to our mission.
What Do STEM Champions Do?
STEM Champions support IEEE and TryEngineering’s global communities, to engage and impact as many students as possible. Champions conduct pre-university STEM outreach events in their local communities, and also help promote IEEE and TryEngineering’s programs and events, such as the STEM Summit.
All of these responsibilities and more are detailed in an orientation webinar that new Champions attend in June.
Are there Benefits of being a STEM Champion?
There are many benefits of being selected as a STEM Champion! Champions will receive access to exclusive STEM outreach resources, opportunities from being involved in a community of fellow volunteers, and recognition for their contributions to pre-university STEM education.
One significant method of this recognition is through STEM Champion Spotlights! STEM Champions will be presented with a form to complete if they would like to be considered for a Spotlight. IEEE and TryEngineering staff will read through all the submissions, and select Champions for follow-up interviews. These interviews will turn into a STEM Champion Spotlight post that lives on TryEngineering.org, and may even be featured in the monthly TryEngineering newsletter!
