Are you a high school student who plans to get a degree in engineering? A free engineering summer internship from the University of Utah’s College of Engineering could give you a head start. According to a university press release, selected students will spend eight weeks working with professors on high-scale research in fields including civil, environmental, mechanical, and biomedical engineering, as well as computer science. They will also be tasked with developing a project for the Utah Science and Engineering Fair held in spring.
The program will include 30 hours of research and five hours of workshops and field trips each week. Currently, the program is anticipated to be an in-person internship, but this may change depending on the COVID-19 pandemic. About 40 to 50 students will be chosen to attend, and one to three students will be paired with a professor.
“Students who are interested in going into engineering, if they do this kind of internship in the summer, they can come to college in their first year already having the experience of working in a lab, and this gives them a huge leg up,” said Program coordinator Megan Deon Bettilyon in the press statement.
The program, which will be held on the university campus in Salt Lake City, will run from June 6 to July 29. Any high schooler planning to graduate in 2023 or 2024 (current sophomores or juniors) is welcome to apply. While there aren’t any educational requirements, some professors may require students meet minimum math readiness or other fundamental technical skills.
While the program is free, students will not be paid and must obtain their own housing.
The deadline to register is Feb. 18.
