Have you ever noticed how much land goes unused? Maybe in your own community, you’ve seen large plots of land just sit there without serving any purpose. This Urban Gardens project turned an unused area of land into a sustainable garden for the entire community to enjoy.
And the best part? You too can turn an empty plot of land into something enjoyable for the community, while also helping the environment. EPICS in IEEE supports student-led projects by granting funds, as well as by offering helpful resources. All you have to do is gather a team, brainstorm an idea, and draw up a proposal! It’s as simple as that!
The Urban Gardens project was granted $10,000, which helped supply them with the needed materials to create this sustainable garden. They built a climate-resilient garden that ultimately provided affordable, fresh produce to community members who normally struggled to access it.
EPICS in IEEE is an incredible program that provides students with hands-on opportunities not normally offered in classroom settings. Not only did these students get that experience, but they also uplifted an entire community, as the space doubled for a community lounge area where relationships were strengthened. Even better, local high school students were able to utilize the open-source “Farmbot” to access learning modules in an exciting summer camp.
