Engineer Your Own Ball Drop

Who says you have to celebrate New Year’s right when the clock strikes midnight? There are some awesome STEM-related New Year’s crafts to assist you in an early celebration. These challenges all involve creating your very own makeshift ball drop so that you can celebrate whenever and wherever!

These challenges are great to keep kids occupied with a fun activity before the festivities and still involve them in the celebration while adhering to their bedtime!

LEGO Ball Drop

LEGOs can be used for quite about anything, but did you know you can use them to bring in the new year? This step-by-step instruction guide shows you how to build your very own ball drop using a LEGO tower and one ping pong ball. Even cooler, you can build 2023 out of LEGOS as the pictures did!

To incorporate even more STEM into this activity, you can challenge others to build a taller tower or even play a guessing game for how many pieces were used in it!

Glittery Ball Drop

This creation is much more sparkly than the LEGO ball drop and involves a bit more building and experimenting. The goal of this activity is to see which string moves the ball the fastest. In this experiment, they used yarn, wax string, and a glittery string, all of which the ball was tested on!

Besides different types of strings, you will need a glue stick, a bread tag, a gold glittery string, and a piece of silver corrugated paper. Using these materials, follow the directions to make your very own glistening ball drop! Make it even more of a challenge by racing others to see whose ball will drop first!

Be sure to have fun and remember to bring the amazing world of STEM into 2023. TryEngineering wishes you a Happy and Healthy New Year!
