The COVID-19 pandemic may have closed down schools across the U.S., but girls are still finding ways to come together to learn about science and technology.

The All Girls STEM Society has teams in Southern California and Virginia. Usually, they get together at their local libraries to do fun STEM activities and listen to guest talks from female professionals who work in science and tech. After COVID-19 forced their libraries to close, the girls started hosting their activities on Zoom.

In April, the kids held a Zoom workshop on “Probability and Prediction,” where 45 girls from grades 5-8 learned all about the fundamentals of probability and how much it applies to their lives. In May, they organized a virtual “All Girls Math Bonanza.” From their homes, girls from grades 3 – 8 competed in teams to solve hard math problems.

Before the pandemic, members organized a bunch of other cool workshops on STEM topics including robots, coding, neuroscience, and biology that are currently available on their website.

All Girls STEM

The All Girls STEM Society is led by a student board of directors. Some of the members’ teachers volunteer to develop their curriculums.

“We’re trying to expand to get girls from more schools to go to All Girls STEM events and online workshops,” Mira Gowda, a high school sophomore and the All Girls STEM Director of Fundraising and Outreach, told the Rancho Santa Fe Review. “It’s something to do while we’re all at home and it’s not a super high commitment.”

Gowda told the Review that a workshop she recently led on logic wasn’t a topic she knew well, but said that’s her favorite thing about the All Girls STEM Society. “I can explore new things and learn more about them,” she said.

The All Girls STEM Society was founded in 2018 by then-high schoolers Veronica Tang and Eleni Fafoutis, who now attend Harvard University and the University of Virginia, respectively.
