Militaries have sought to inflict damage on enemies without the risk of their own troops since the dawn of warfare. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, are the latest advancement in this ancient strategy. Although drones were originally developed for military purposes, today non-military UAVs are widely available to the public for a variety of professional and leisure activities.

To what extent have Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) been used to benefit humanity? With the UAV(Drones) REACH inquiry unit, or lesson plan, your students will enjoy learning about what UAVs are and how they’ve been used throughout history. Students will be able to explore the origins of drones and their related technologies. The UAV(Drones) inquiry unit, features the above engaging video on the history of drones, an interactive hands-on activity, and several primary sources that will allow your students to understand the social context of UAVs and use critical thinking skills similar to those of a historian. With this REACH UAV(Drones) inquiry unit, your students will not only learn, but they will have fun doing it!

We hope you find this inquiry unit helpful in your in-person or virtual classroom. We are also interested in collecting feedback, so please share your experiences with the resources with us! Please send your feedback to reach@ieee.org. Your insight relative to using the resources will assist us to ensure the program meets your needs and remains valuable.
