In 2018, Nigerian-born software engineer Bukola Somide released a children’s book titled Somi, The Computer Scientist: Princess Can Code. This inspiring story shows young girls the journey of Somi, who learns about computer programming through real-life examples and her mother, who happens to be a software engineer. Due to the popularity of the book, Somi is now being turned into an interactive doll that can help girls learn code.

The 14-inch doll, scheduled to be available to the public in August 2020, will teach young girls about tech, including HTML, JavaScript, artificial intelligence and binary numbers. Somide would like to make more storybooks for young girls that would include ebooks and tutorials. She also plans on expanding the brands reach by having school districts utilize her activity books in their curriculums.
