International Day of the Girl-October 11, 2022
Over the last decade, Unicef has recognized the challenges that the girls of our world face by instituting International Day of the Girl. Celebrated this year on October 11, the 2022 theme is, “Our time is now—our rights, our future”. In commemoration of the 10th anniversary, the theme is a reflection on the barriers to girls’ rights to education, physical and mental wellness, and protections needed for a life without violence, as well as a call to action rooted in girls’ resourcefulness, creativity, tenacity, and resilience.
In the last 10 years, there has been increased attention to girls rights and needs by governments, policymakers, and the general public. However, investments in girls’ rights remain limited and have been exacerbated by crises of climate change, COVID-19, and humanitarian conflict.
Girls are ready for a decade of acceleration forward. Get involved and share stories, blogs and videos of inspiring girls who are changemakers, and the inspiring networks and organizations that are resourcing girls, letting girls lead, and strengthening services for girls. Join a global virtual event celebrating International Day of the Girl. Read more here.
Girls in STEM
Females remain an underrepresented demographic in both STEM education and careers worldwide, and this disparity is even greater in developing and socioeconomically-challenged regions. Thankfully, engineers, educators, leaders, and other professional recognize this problem and are committed to opening up pathways for girls to access the education and opportunities they need to pursue a career in a STEM related field.
Tryengineering.org provides many resources dedicated to help increase the amount of females that study and pursue a career in a STEM-related field. Check out this Girls in STEM edition of TryEngineering Tuesday, where the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) group leads the way in exploring how females can be inspired to pursue STEM educations and careers. Be inspired as a STEM profession to make a difference by reading about these volunteer programs with a focus on girls in STEM. Additionally, you can read more about various ways women are influencing STEM in the world in these TryEngineering articles such as Films that Inspire Women in STEM or Teenage Girl’s Discovery Could Lead to COVID-19 Cure.
