The US government is showing a renewed interest in STEM education. In a recent federal report, Charting a Course for Success: America’s Strategy for STEM Education, the U.S. Department of Education stated that they plan on increasing opportunities for underrepresented students to learn about STEM.

Over the next five years, the government envisions creating a future where all Americans can have access to quality STEM education.

Three goals to help accomplish this are:

Build Strong Foundations for STEM Literacy by making sure everyone has the opportunity to pursue a career in STEM and become familiar with basic STEM concepts.

Increase Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM by ensuring that all Americans, including those in groups that have been underrepresented in the past, can access STEM education.

Prepare the STEM Workforce for the Future, for all STEM practitioners with or without a degree, by creating positive learning experiences that encourage and prepare all who wish to pursue STEM careers.

By 2022, the number of jobs available in STEM fields is expected to reach nearly 9 million. However, there has not been an increase in education in these areas. The U.S. federal government is now investing and supporting an array of educational activities for all ages and learning environments.
