STEM refers to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education can take place across all grade levels, starting at preschool and reaching post-doctoral studies. Over the years, more acronyms have been added, such as:

  • STEAM (STEAM plus Arts)
  • ESTEM (STEM plus an environmental focus)
  • STEMIE (STEM, plus invention and entrepreneurship)
  • STEMLE (STEM, plus law and economics)
  • METALS (STEAM, plus logic)
  • STREM (STEM, plus robotics)
  • STREAM (STEAM, plus reading)
  • STEMM (STEM, plus medicine or manufacturing)

Seeing the growing adaptation of STEM shows that basic science, technology, engineering and math concepts are relevant to multiple disciplines. As an educator, being able to connect these concepts might not be simple.
