Lifecycle of Medicine – outreach program in schools

As part of its commitment to community engagement and STEM education, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) BNMIT Student Branch Chapter, in association with the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, BNMIT, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) BNMIT Student Branch Chapter, and the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) BNMIT Affinity Group, organized an outreach program titled “Lifecycle of Medicine – Outreach Program in Schools” for the Grade 8 students of Capital Public School, J.P. Nagar, on 30 July 2026. The session aimed to introduce students to the fascinating journey of medicines and vaccines—from their discovery in laboratories to reaching patients—while creating awareness about healthcare, vaccination, and the responsible use of medicines through an engaging and interactive learning experience.
Session Highlights
The session covered the complete life cycle of medicines, beginning with research and development, pre-clinical testing, clinical trials, production, and distribution to patients. Students were introduced to the importance of medicines, different systems of medicine practiced in India, and the three phases of clinical trials through storytelling and real-life examples. The presentation also highlighted the history of vaccines through the story of Edward Jenner, explained different types of vaccines, vaccination versus immunization, and emphasized the role of healthy practices such as hand hygiene, vaccination, and disease prevention. The concepts were presented in a simple and relatable manner, making complex biomedical topics easy for middle-school students to understand.
Participant Engagement and Outcome
The outreach program witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 95 students, who actively engaged in interactive discussions, quizzes, and classroom activities throughout the session. Students participated in a quiz on medicines, vaccines, and disease prevention, followed by a hands-on activity where they arranged the stages in the life cycle of a medicine in the correct sequence. The interactive approach encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and teamwork while reinforcing key concepts. The program successfully enhanced students’ understanding of medicine and healthcare, inspiring scientific curiosity and demonstrating the importance of biomedical innovations in improving public health.
