Q: I am an electrical engineering student who have genuinely enjoyed math courses throughout high school and the first two years of college.

What fields within electrical engineering would you recommend I focus on?

Q: I am an undergraduate neuroscience major and I recently became interested in engineering.

I think that I have the science skills necessary to go into the field, but I wonder if it is possible to pursue engineering after graduation or if it is much too late to begin graduate school study.

I completed pre-med courses, but realized that medicine is not for me and that I like the creativity that the field of engineering offers.

Q: I hear that it's tough for a woman to make it in engineering is this so?

Q: Is Aeronautical Engineering a good field for women?

We think it is. In fact, we think ALL fields of engineering are good for women. It is true, however, that in some fields women are represented in higher numbers (for examples, Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Engineering); some engineering fields are still much more male dominated (for example, Petroleum Engineering and Marine Engineering).

Aeronautical Engineering is somewhere in between - in the United States it is a bit more popular with women than Electrical Engineering (9.1% of Aerospace Engineers are women but only 8.7% of Electrical Engineers are). Aeronautical Engineering is slightly less popular with women in the US when compared to Civil Engineering (see the statistics here).

The good news is that many employers understand the need to attract more women to Aeronautical Engineering and in many segments of the indutry the employment prospects for women are excelllent. Moreover, though the number of women in Aeronautical Engineering in the past was not large, some of them have been very influential. We are thinking of Amelia Earhart, Jacqueline Cochran, and even Patty Wagstaff. There were in fact very many famous women aviators.

So our advice is go for it! Aeronautical Engineering can be a very interesting and rewarding field for women.
